Northern Feva training got off to a blistering good start at Yorkshire Dales SC with Dave Hivey at the weekend; 20 sailors travelled from across the North and down from Scotland to be pushed hard by Dave’s inimitable coaching style, and by the weather which was as feisty and as uncompromising as the coach! There were strong gusty northerly winds, driving rain and bitter cold. Undeterred, this strong group of national squad and national level sailors had an awesome time focusing on downwind sailing, leeward mark rounding and gybing; with racing, start line practice and teamwork thrown in to the mix. Launching in these conditions was quite testing, and there were a fair few capsizes, balanced by some exhilarating planing downwind. Thanks to Dave and to the sailors for keeping the weekend so positive despite the conditions; and to the three Dad’s and the club rib drivers for sticking it out on the water to provide rescue support. Congratulations to Pierce and Alfie for some great sailing whilst keeping their mast intact! A big thank you to YDSC for their warm welcome, an even warmer bonfire, good food and fireworks. Thank you also to Mike Saul dinghy services for repairing a mast at the end of Saturday so that its owners could join in the fun again on Sunday. Some excellent photographs of Saturday’s sailing courtesy of Paul Hargreaves can be found on Facebook on the Yorkshire Dales Sailing Club public group.
